Sunday Services

Was ever another command so obeyed? For century after century, spreading slowly to every continent and country and among every race on earth, this action has been done...week by week and month by month, on a hundred thousand successive Sundays, faithfully, unfailingly, across all the parishes of Christendom.

Dom Gregory Dix, “The Shape of the Liturgy”

The mass is the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord's Day and other major Feasts. As the source and summit of the Catholic faith, the mass gathers us in prayer, spiritually nourishes us, and sends out into the world to do the work God has given us to do. In this Church, all baptized Christians who seek a deeper relationship with God are invited to receive our Lord's Body and Blood.

Sung Mass at 9 a.m.

This service includes organ music, hymns, a sermon, and incense. The service lasts about 60 minutes and is followed by coffee hour in Wheeler Hall.

Solemn High Mass at 11 a.m.

This service includes many of the hallmarks of the Anglo-Catholic tradition – ornate vestments, formal ritual, holy water and incense. In addition to the sermon, organ music, and congregational hymns, the Ascension Choir offers Gregorian chant and choral music. The service generally lasts 75 minutes and is followed by coffee hour in Wheeler Hall.

Evensong & Benediction

First Sunday of the month, Fall through early Summer.

Evensong is one of the jewels of Anglicanism. Evensong, also known as Evening Prayer (particularly when said rather than sung) is part of the Daily Office. The service includes chanted psalms and canticles, choir anthems, congregational hymns, readings from Holy Scripture, and prayers. At Church of the Ascension, Evensong is offered in conjunction with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. This devotional rite includes prayers, hymns, and a short meditation offered in praise of Our Lord made present to us in the mysteries of the Sacrament of the Altar.
