The Property
Narthex
Just to the left of the LaSalle Street entrance, the narthex serves as a foyer or vestibule for the sanctuary, the main part of the church. Bulletins or mass cards for the service will be available in this area. The narthex is also used for sacramental rites (the baptismal font is located here) and occasionally for fellowship (small receptions take place here after certain evening services.)
Nave
The main part of the church. It includes pews for the congregation, a loft for the choir, the Schrader pipe organ [LINK] a traditional confessional, rood screen, chancel, and the high altar.
Wheeler Hall
The main social gathering space after each mass on Sundays. It is the site for coffee hour as well as other receptions. Wheeler Hall can be accessed through the LaSalle Street entrance as well as from the garden. There is a small rest room located in Wheeler Hall. The main public restrooms are located off the hallway outside of Wheeler Hall.
Library
Located on the second floor, directly above Wheeler Hall. It is the site for Christian Formation presentations as well as smaller parish meetings.
St. Michael’s Hall
This original liturgical space built after the Great Chicago Fire, St. Michael’s Hall is currently used for our outreach ministries (St. Chrys’s Closet and the monthly food pantry). Part of the hall is also reserved for choir rehearsals.
Garden
Our Lady of Victory Garden is just to the south of the church building. It is open to the public during daylight hours. During fair weather, the garden provides additional space for fellowship and parish receptions.
Parking Lot
Located at the corner of LaSalle and Maple, the parking lot is available to visitors to Ascension. The entrance is on Maple (an east-going one way street). Free parking is available for visitors on Sundays until 1:30 p.m.
